World-first tooth-regrowing drug will be given to humans in September
A groundbreaking drug capable of regrowing teeth will enter human trials in September 2024 at Kyoto University Hospital. This trial will include 30 men aged 30-64 missing at least one molar, following promising results in ferret and mouse studies. The drug works by deactivating the USAG-1 protein, promoting bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling to stimulate tooth growth. Future trials will expand to children with congenital tooth deficiencies and adults with partial tooth loss. The drug could be commercially available by 2030.
