Could Vitamin C Also Offer a Mood Boost?

Vitamin C is commonly thought of as an immune system-boosting vitamin. It is exceptionally helpful in preventing, or shortening, the span of infections.

Vitamin C may also help to boost your mental health as well. Uma Naidoo, MD, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and professional chef explains that “it’s essential for the production of neurotransmitters in the brain.” This includes Dopamine, which is the “happy” chemical and is vital for mental health.

Many psychiatrists have started to focus on diet as a key contributor to mental health. Of course simply increasing your vitamin C intake isn’t going to automatically make you happier, it is just one of the factors that makes up the entire mental health picture.

According to Healthline, the recommended daily amount of vitamin C is 75 mg for women and 90 mg for men. If you are taking vitamin C supplements, don’t take more than 2000 mg daily.
